You can choose a stand up paddle board according to several criteria:
Itiwit suggests 2 types of level in stand up paddling:
Stand up paddle for occasional trips - beginner
If you are a beginner, you would like to go for a strong and economical aluminium paddle.
Stand up paddle for regular trips / racing - experienced
If you are experienced, you would like to go for a carbon or fiberglass paddle.
More lightweight and efficient.
Paddles are either fixed, adjustable or detachable/adjustable.
1) Adjustable paddles: To adjust the paddle according to your size or your activity level.
2) Detachable/adjustable paddles: More compact, they can be detached into 2 pieces and fit into a stand up paddle bag (89 cm). You will also be able to adjust it according to your size, your activity level.
3) Fixed paddles: Intended for 1 person. They are lighter than adjustable paddles.
To know which standard size of stand up paddle will suit you the best, hold it straight in front of you, the blade on the floor. Your wrist should be just able to comfortably bend over the paddle handle when your arm is extended above your head.
Trips:
Paddle length = your size + 17 to 27 cm
Racing:
Paddle length = your size + 20 to 30 cm (a longer paddle will give you more power, a better extension and a better position)
Surfing:
Length paddle = your size + 10 to 20 cm (a shorter paddle for surfing will be less cumbersome)
